Women in Construction
TAT Associate and Director of Interior Design Meghann Van Dorn has been selected as a featured woman in construction by New York Real Estate Journal (NYREJ). Meghann shares the challenges and opportunities facing women in the industry and what advice she has for women just starting out.
What emerging challenge or opportunity do you see shaping the construction industry in the next few years, and how are you preparing for it?
I’d say this is evolving rather than emerging: our culture’s relationship with technology has created digital hyper-connection alongside physical and emotional isolation. Technology is here to stay, but that’s where design comes in — we have a real opportunity to create spaces that foster authentic human interaction while incorporating technology in ways that enhance rather than hinder connection.
What is one piece of advice or perspective you would share with women beginning their careers in the construction industry?
The most successful women I’ve worked with across the construction industry do one thing very effectively: they combine their technical knowledge with clear communication and an ability to build relationships across the field. This doesn’t mean that they have all the answers – in fact, quite the opposite – but they know how to explain their perspective clearly, they are willing to collaborate on solutions, they give credit to others, and they don’t underestimate the importance of their voice in the room.
